Record crowds show up for Foothills Festival

BY JEFFERY WINBORNE, DME, September 8, 2019

Despite temperatures dropping to the upper 70s by the end of the night on Saturday, Jasper was the hotspot to be this weekend for the 2019 Foothills Festival.

After what was said to be the largest Friday crowd in the history of the event, Saturday, headlined by rock group Blues Traveler, drew an even larger crowd once the sun set on downtown Jasper.

"That was the largest Friday crowd that we've ever had," Jasper Mayor David O'Mary said midday Saturday. "Whiskey Myers brought out a big crowd, and we are expecting even more with Blues Traveler tonight."

Those expectations were met, as fans from all around Alabama and surrounding states filled the area in front of the stage, stretching back into the courthouse square in downtown Jasper.

With a heat index as high as 105 degrees, combined with Alabama football hosting their home opener earlier in the day, the crowds took some time to gather on Saturday. Those that arrived early were treated to a leisurely, albiet hot, stroll through several blocks of retail and food venders lining the streets throughout downtown Jasper. Area businesses and restaurants set up shop outside, offering event-goers a unique shopping and eating experience that has become a yearly staple for Jasper's biggest event of the year.

The Foothills Festival has grown exponentially over the years, attracting high profile musical acts such Tonic, Sister Hazel, Deana Carter, Spin Doctors and more throughout the years. The 2019 lineup proved to be just a popular as any other in the history of the Festival.

Zach Baker is the talent buyer for the annual event, working every year to bring in the best musical acts available for the Foothills Festival.

"I felt like we had one of the best lineups that we've ever had, and that showed by the crowd," Baker said. "All the bands have enjoyed their time  in Jasper. They love the hospitality they receive when they come into our community."
